The first question I am asked as a muslim woman is: why do muslim women wear Hija'ab? (People see it as a form of oppression, or subservience.) And it is also pointed out to me that not all muslim women wear Hija'ab. And why some women cover more of their bodies than others. |

The first question I am asked as a muslim woman is: why do muslim women wear Hija'ab? (People see it as a form of oppression, or subservience.) And it is also pointed out to me that not all muslim women wear Hija'ab. And why some women cover more of their bodies than others.
Well, there is an answer to every question!!! as the answers can all be found if we just seek the answers.
First, It has been commanded by Allah! and this should speak for itself, to submit to allah is truly what islam is and what it meants to be called a muslim. "O Prophet! Tell your wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful." QU'RAN 33:59 Second, The purpose of Hija'ab is protection of the woman and her virtue. Third, It is Respect of the woman wearing the Hija'ab. Both self respect and the respect of others who look upon her. Fourth, It is a respect given to a husband in keeping your beauty for that relationship alone. There are many other reasons why women want to wear Hija'ab. But this is the basic foundation of understanding. And as there is diversity in nature, there is diversity in this world with many different cultures and people groups. Wearing your face covered, or not; wearing sandals or socks, wearing a jilbab (an outer covering dress) or not; these are all issues that are based mostly on the culture of origin and country. It is only the commandment that is not flexible. But alas, I do not consider myself an expert. So, I have gathered many website links that contain a wealth of knowledge. I pray you find the answers you seek. I would like to impart this one thing to you, if you are a NEW convert to Islam, do not rush your decision on wearing HIJA'AB. It is a very important commitment you make with Allah, not anyone else! As your understanding grows your vision will BE REFINED, just keep seeking the answers to the questions you have. And you will find your way, creating your own culture within the specifications given in the Holy Qu'ran. LASTLY, WEARING HIJA'AB IS NOT A CULTURAL ISSUE. IT IS A COMMAND OF ALLAH! AND THIS IS TRUE LIBERATION! |
